GODBOX Pro goes into production, bringing AMD’s Threadripper Pro WRX80 chipset and CPU with NVIDIA’s professional GPUs and accelerated real-time visualization, together in an enterprise level desktop workstation.
It’s been a journey that started in 2016 when On-Set Facilities (OSF) took their first PCs on to virtual production sets. What started out as a mega gamming rig, built by OSF to power Unreal Engine on-set, is now a complete power edge computing solution, one that provides artists and developers with the power to develop full-spectrum real-time virtual production pipelines, on the desktop, in the studio and on-set. From powering in-camera VFX on LED to designing products and building in real-time in Omniverse or designing 3D applications for AR/VR in Unity, the new GODBOX Pro is the worlds first real-time engine verified professional workstation.
Building Professional Workstation for Real-Time Design and Development.
Earning a reputation for building on-set computers for some of the worlds top VFX and virtual production companies, earlier this year OSF joined forces to partner with enterprise computer component manufacturers and big tech companies. Now with access to proprietary enterprise level components and verification, OSF are to launch a new GODBOX Pro professional workstation.
GODBOX® Pro brings enterprise power to your desktop. Built around the AMD Threadripper Pro CPU with up to 64 cores, up to 2TB of ECC RAM, and up to four double-wide NVIDIA RTX graphics cards. GODBOX® Pro is the professional workstation that’s designed for running production critical real-time applications.
The first GODBOX Pro desktop workstation is priced competitively to hit the Apple’s Mac Pro Workstation market. “We started our own computer company, to build the kinds of machines that artists, developers and designers need, today” said GODBOX Founder Asa Bailey. While the rest of the computing industry has been focusing on thin clients and datacenter cloud solutions, OSF has been building real-time machines at the edge, that Bailey calls “Our power edge solutions.” Bringing powerful Windows / Linux computers out of the cloud and on to the desktop may not be fashionable in IT circles, but it’s what you need for running real-time applications at their best.
As real-time applications are now being adopted in many industries, artists, designers and developers are starting to realize that having the compute power locally, is a very good idea.
Having GODBOX by your side, is exactly what you need for creating in real-time. Less lag, lower system latency, and faster compute times, all happening locally with no to very little distance to compute. Add in synchronicity, predictability, and the importance of security and production reliability, all this is considered and designed into the new GODBOX Pro, that now only uses all enterprise level, validated, hardware.
What’s inside the GODBOX Pro Workstation
The GODBOX® Pro workstation is based on the AMD WRX80 platform with all its advantages, such as an eight-channel memory subsystem, delivering the low latency, high through-put data speeds required when working with multiple and often distributed data streams. Also, the new GODBOX® Pro desktop workstation can use up 2TB of DDR4-ECC RAM, available on all of its 128 usable PCIe 4.0 lanes. The GODBOX® motherboard carries six PCIe 4.0 x16 full size expansion slots, that’s 4 double width NVIDIA RTX GPUs and there is still room for an I/O card and a Quadro Sync. With four M.2 slots for SSDs, two U.2 sockets, one GbE port and one 10GbE connector, stacks of USB 3.2, Gen 2 Type-A, & Type-C USB ports, and a 7.1-audio codec to boot.
As some background, the Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series CPU’s and AMD TRX40 chipset came out in February 2020, targeted at enthusiasts, content creators and streamers. Based on AMD Zen 2 architecture, it featured a truly ground-breaking performance with up to 64 cores and 128 threads, up to 256GB of DDR4-3200 memory in quad-channel configuration and 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes. But it wasn’t quite enough for OSF’s power edge ambitions.
Ryzen Threadripper PRO takes things to the next level with the new AMD WRX80 chipset. As the name suggests, it is recommended for professionals such as studio creators, designers, engineers and data scientists. It features up to 64 compute cores and 128 threads, but it also improves GODBOX Pro specifications at every other level too. GODBOX Pro Workstations come pre-configured workstation builds or as a custom built PC solution.
GODBOX Pro Workstations supports up to 2TB of RAM in an 8-channel configuration for higher capacity and greater memory bandwidth. 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes support bandwidth-hungry devices such as GPU’s and network cards.
In addition to this, GODBOX is “Enterprise ready” with AMD PRO Technologies which brings built-in security and memory encryption to help protect sensitive data, manageability, software support and validation, as well as long-life availability and reliability, making it stable enough for deployment in enterprise and production critical environments. With 6 PCIe 4.0 x16 expansion slots supporting devices such as multiple GPU’s, I/O video cards and high-speed network controllers. The GODBOX comes with a pre-installed Black Magic Declink 8K as standard with an AJA option for broadcast customers.
As for storage, GODBOX Pro Workstations supports up to four M.2 and two U.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD’s as well as four SATA3 drives. There are plenty of I/O too – we have one 10GBase-T and one GbE network port that is shared with GODBOX Manager (remote management), plenty of USB 3.2 ports including USB Type-C, a legacy Serial / COM port, 7.1 HD Audio connectors.
NVIDIA RTX GPUs
The new GODBOX Pro ships with at least one professional NVIDIA GPU, but it can take up to four double width NVIDIA professional Ampere GPUs, that’s potentially 4 x A6000s and still have room for the pre installed decklink 8K I/O card.
In terms of the front I/O we have everything needed:
LED on/off button
Headphone-out and Microphone-in jacks
USB 3.2 Type-C
Two USB 3.2 Type-A
Two USB 2.0 Type-A
The GODBOX has an excellent expandability too. It supports the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro CPU with up to 64 cores / 128 threads and 2TB RAM. Thanks to six PCIe 4.0 x16 slots and eight card expansion slots in the chassis, it is the first Threadripper Pro workstation on the market that can support up to four double-width GPU’s such us NVIDIA A6000 and GeForce RTX3090 or six single-width such as A4000. An add-in card support bracket keeps your precious GPU’s steady and secured during shipping.
The first GODBOX Pro Workstations are available to order direct from On-Set Facilities. Prices start at 5995 up to 15995 for pre-built configurations, custom configurations are also available.
