On-Set Facilities Joins SRT Alliance to re-invent film production

Filming in the cloud

On-Set Facilities have joined the SRT Alliance to employ SRT, the open source low latency video transport protocol to power StormCloud the virtual production VPN. Using the StormCloud virtual production VPN production crews and talent all come together on virtual sets that are located in the cloud. By using the SRT protocol StormCloud is able to transport low latency timecoded video from any location into Unreal Engine. Once the video is inside the game engine, teams of virtual cinematographers, VFX artists and virtual production designers all come together to work in unison and shoot the production.

The SRT Alliance, founded by Haivision in April 2017, already has more than 350 members. Its mission is to overcome the challenges of low-latency live streaming by supporting the collaborative development of SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) Open Source, the fastest growing open source streaming project. SRT is a free open source video transport protocol and technology stack originally developed and pioneered by Haivision that enables the delivery of high-quality and secure, low-latency video across the public internet.

Filming in-engine and previewed in real-time and with pre-production and editorial teams also connected to StormCloud, virtual production is blurring the lines between what happens on-set physical sets and virtual sets hosted in the cloud. Director of Photography and CEO of On-Set Facilities Asa Bailey said “We chose SRT for a number of reasons; SRT is an open source project and we firmly believe in making virtual production available to everyone. Also security is a key concern for content rights owners and SRT not only provides high quality, low latency, video transport between StormCloud production environments, it’s also very secure.

Powered by Nvidia Quadro technology and running on the Microsoft Azure infrastructure with entry points currently set up in London and San Francisco, StormCloud is currently being BETA tested by number of Hollywood Studios and VFX facilities.
